Wearing a heavy bag to school everyday has become a fright for many primary pupils in Vietnam and proven to be a safety risk.

Primary pupils have to bring a "mobile bookshelf" to schools
Parents have begun to fully recognise the dangers of backpacks to their children's safety after the recent news about a primary schoolgirl in Ho Chi Minh City who broke her collar bone due to her heavy bag.
“My wife and I are often very busy, therefore, my son has to walk 2 kilometres to school on his own, lugging around his heavy bag. However, after hearing about the injuries from the media, we decided to take my son to school and then pick him up,” shared Tran Minh Tam, father of a 5th grade student at Binh Chieu Primary School in Thu Duc District.
Nguyen Thi Huong Tra in Ward 12, Binh Thanh district said, “Numerous times I have seen my daughter covered in sweat while carrying her bag. After reading the news, I checked the weight of the schoolbag and to my surprise, it weighed five kilograms. The bag contains about ten thick books and notebooks which are not only heavy enough to make children tired but also adults. She needs all of them for her classes in a day.”
“Everyday, I must walk to school because my parents are busy. It takes me around 20 minutes to get there and I walk more than one kilometre," Vu Hung, a fifth-grade student at Hiep Binh Chanh Primary School told us.
"The heavy bag makes me uncomfortable so I often take a rest just after a short time. This sometimes makes me late to school," she added.

The World Health Organization said that children should only take schoolbags equal to 1/10 of their weight. But, in reality, primary pupils have to bring a "mobile bookshelf" to schools. This is among the major cause of humpbacks and spinal column deformation.
Trauma and orthopedic doctors from Paediatrics Hospital No. 2 in Ho Chi Minh City advised parents to exclude unnecessary items from the bags.

Bui Thi Yen Anh, a fourth-grade student in Hooc Moon district, Ho Chi Minh City, was taken to Van Hanh Hospital for a medical check-up after she felt pain in her shoulder on September 25. Dr. Huynh Ba Linh, head of the hospital's bone and joint surgery ward, examined the X-ray and discovered that her left collar bone was broken and the spinal column was deformed. He believes that the main cause was her 4.5-kg schoolbag which the girl, who weighs only 27-kg, had to take to school everyday. |
