Do Thi Thu Trang, an environment science student at the Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, has begun a campaign to highlight how meat production contributes to global warming.
“Go vegetarian for the environment,” which hopes to get pledges from 1000 people not to eat meat once a month, is sponsored by Live& Learn Vietnam, an NGO involved in environmental education and community development.
The campaign will begin October 3 in the north and October 10 in the rest of the country.
GREACT Hue, an environmental club of which Trang is president, has opened a publicity booth at Hanoi’s Dong Da mound – where national hero Quang Trung-Nguyen Hue defeated the Qing invaders in 1789 -- to display pictures of vegetarian food and organize events and games to explain the relation between vegetarianism and the environment.
Eating vegetarian food to protect the environment is becoming popular in Vietnam as people become increasingly aware of the relationship between consumption of meat and the greenhouse effect.
A 2007 Japanese study found that over 4,500 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions are produced by an average cow during its life, mostly methane from its digestive system.
Eating a kilogram of beef produces more greenhouse gas emissions than driving for three hours while leaving the lights on at home, it said.
