“Sunny Days-Rainy Nights”, a one night musical fusion performance featuring Western and Vietnamese traditional instruments, played by five Danish and five Vietnamese musicians respectively, will take stage on October 16 at the Hanoi Youth Theater.
Musician Michael Moller – also event’s vocalist – said that concert’s title, as well as most pieces in the program, were inspired by recurrent themes in Ho Chi Minh’s poetry and Bao Ninh’s novel “Noi Buon Chien Tranh” (Sadness of War), as he was touched by both after reading their English translations.
He also hopes to meet Bao Ninh once in Vietnam.
Among the traditional Vietnamese instruments will be the monochord zither (a flat box-shaped string instrument), the 16-Chord Zither and the 36-Chord Zither.
The night’s repertoire will include 12 arrangements co-composed by Danish musicians Nicolai Abrahamsen and Michael Moller.
The night’s repertoire will include 12 arrangements co-composed by Danish musicians Nicolai Abrahamsen and Michael Moller.
Moller will sing three songs including one inspired by “Just Bow your Head, Oh Flower” by Danish composer Carl Nielsen.
The repertoire’s highlight will be a piece composed by Michael Moller himself for Phuong – the main female character in “Nuoi Buon Chien Tranh”.
Both Michael Moller and Nicolai Abrahamsen previously cooperated with Vietnamese musicians Quoc Trung and Vu Nhat Tan at the Hanoi Music Festival in 2009.
The concert will provide an opportunity for cultural exchange as it will be recorded and screened to Danish and international audiences in the future to introduce Vietnamese traditional instruments to music enthusiasts outside of Vietnam.
Free tickets are available at the Hanoi Youth Theater and the Danish Embassy.
