President Aquino will keep his travel expenses low when he visits Vietnam next week to attend a regional summit, a Palace official said on Thursday.
Secretary Ramon Carandang of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office said the President would bring a lean delegation and remain prudent in his travel expenses in Vietnam similar to his recent economical trip to the United States.
The President is expected to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit and related meetings in Vietnam next week, his second overseas journey since assuming office last June. His Vietnam tour starts on October 26 and ends on October 30.
“We don’t intend to spend any more money than we need to for this trip. Foreign trips of course are an obligation of the President and a trip to ASEAN is a must for any president so we are going to go there,” Carandang told reporters in the Palace. “Of course as always we will try to keep the expenses down mindful of the deficit,” he added.
To prevent unnecessary expenses, Carandang said having a lean delegation is a policy of the Aquino government. “We are not going to spend any more of the people’s money than necessary. We will have again a lean delegation in this Vietnam trip,” he said, adding the list of the members of the delegation would be released shortly.
In Vietnam, the President will also join other leaders attending the ASEAN+3 and the East Asia Summit and hold separate bilateral meetings with some heads of government.
